EATING DISORDERS (120)
Overfeeding (120a)
“Vicarious Compulsive Overfeeding”
Certain animals are not compulsive overeaters but they live with compulsive overeating owners (or in some cases, wannabe compulsive overeaters). In this situation a dog who might normally be small becomes overweight because the owner transfers his or her overeating condition. Ex: One of my patients, a Maltese, looks and feels more like a bulldog. Her owner keeps telling people that she never feeds the dog. She uses the old “she never eats a thing” excuse.

SEPARATION ANXIETY (140)
Stuck (140a)
“The Single Owner Syndrome” or / “The Dating Single Owner”
Most animals accommodate to their housing situation quickly. A change in their physical housing does not usually cause a problem for them. Relationships with other domestic pets in the same environment is usually worked out. It’s the relationship with the single owner that seems to have an unhealthy impact on the dog population. Ex: Several of the dogs I treat have symptoms of confusing as well as “separation anxiety. Typically their behavior towards their owner is consistent. They are always at the window waiting for the owner to come home. They usually greet the owner right at the door with kisses and jumping. They stay close to the owner at all times. During times when the single owner is not in a human – to – human relationship, the owner is generally consistent in his/her behavior with the dog. HOWEVER, when the human – to human relationship becomes active, the dog is left waiting at the window for days. The separation anxiety becomes very evident during these times.

PERSONALITY DISORDER (300)
Paranoia (300a)
“Someone Is Trying To Kill Me!”
There are some humans that believe people are trying to kill them. Often times these fears are “imagined”. In the case of some of my animal patients their fears are not imagined. Ex: My fish patient is dropped whenever her owner cleans the water in his bowl. The fish questions how it is possible that the owner never drops any food that the owner is cooking and eating, so why is she having so much difficulty holding onto the fish? It seems too fishy to believe.
Anti- Social Behavior (300b)
Narcissists (300c)
“Trophy Dog, Horse, Ferret, (fill in the blank)”
Some humans purchase animals for strange reasons. They purchase animals like the way they would a piece of jewelry, to wear it, for special occasions and then put it away. Ex: One of my patients claims when her owners take her out for a walk, the owner never makes “eye” contact with her. Infact, my patient is convinced her owner is looking to see “who” is watching the owner walk with the dog?
